Scientists Discover New Form of Light

Irish researchers have discovered a new form of light. Light travels in a straight line but also rotates around its axis. It was believed the angular momentum of these photos was a multiple of Planck’s constant, which sets the scale for quantum effects. The researchers theorized certain quantum effects slowed the angular momentum of these [...]

Trends in LED Optics

Below is my lighting column published in the June issue of tED Magazine. Reprinted with permission. The large majority of commercial building luminaires feature some type of optical system that controls the light emission. The type of optics employed ultimately determines where light is directed, how much light reaches that point, and with how much [...]

Architecture Billings Index Shows Continued Modest Growth

After beginning the year with a decline, the Architecture Billings Index has posted three consecutive months of increasing demand for design activity at architecture firms. As a leading economic indicator of construction activity, the ABI reflects the approximate 9- to 12-month lead time between architecture billings and construction spending. The American Institute of Architects (AIA) [...]

Lightning in a Bottle

GE shows us how it’s done. This video shows off the company’s R&D capabilities. Scientists generated 2 million volts of electricity using a Marx generator. Super capacitors, capable of emitting and absorbing large surges of energy, captured that “lightning” in a bottle. The scientists use the bottle to power an electric car and drive off.
