In October 2019, a group of leaders from industry, academia, and government gathered at the Lighting Research Center (LRC) in Troy, New York for the LRC Summit. The goal of the Summit was to inspire discussion and shape the future of lighting, where the industry plays a strategic, recognized role in benefiting society and the environment — from improving human health to enhancing food production to managing clean energy in the new electric grid.

I recently had the opportunity to interview Colleen Costello, Co-Founder and CEO, Vital Vio, Inc., on the topic of visible light disinfection for an article I wrote for the February 2019 issue of tED Magazine, the official publication of the NAED.

Our industry is facing significant changes … LED has transformed lighting, which has typically been a 15-20% category for most distributors. The lighting market is fragmenting rapidly; with the advent of Smart Lighting, IoT and specialty lighting market growth (UV, Horticulture, Agriculture, Biological, etc.). So, where does that leave the legacy alliance model of traditional electrical distributors and manufacturers? The answer is simple… it’s changing, and the key to preserving the legacy relationships is the agreement for both partners to craft a new way forward.
