2010 Next Generation Luminaires Design Competition “Intent to Submit” Deadline: September 13, 2010 (Updated)

NOTE THAT THE DATES HAVE BEEN REVISED BY NGL, WITH THE NEW DATES INSERTED IN BOLD.

The 2010 Next Generation Luminaires (NGL) SSL Design Competition “Intent to Submit” deadline is fast approaching. Intents will be accepted through September 13, 2010. Forms must be submitted online at www.ngldc.org, where competition criteria and required documents can also be found.

An Intent to Submit carries no obligation to enter the competition, but merely facilitates planning. The deadline for final forms and documentation is October 15, with actual product entries due by November 1. Judging will take place December 2-3 and the winners will be announced in February 2011.

WHAT IS NGL?
Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, the International Association of Lighting Designers, and the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America, NGL was created to recognize and promote excellence in the design of energy-efficient LED commercial lighting luminaires, based on the market’s critical concerns about product performance and quality. Products that are on the market or ready for introduction are eligible.

HOW NGL WORKS
Judges examine lighted samples in their intended applications, as well as photometric and other documentation, looking at the quality and quantity of illumination, energy, and serviceability, among other criteria. All products meeting the competition’s minimum criteria are recognized, and from this group the judges can select those deemed Best in Class. In 2008 there were 68 NGL entries, with 22 of them recognized and three named Best in Class. In 2009, 43 products were recognized out of 126 entries, with four named Best in Class.

THE RESULTS
Products that are recognized (either generally or as Best in Class) are awarded certificates. The results—including the manufacturer’s identity—are published by NGL via print and web, and publicized at industry events around the country.

PARTICIPATING IN NGL

The deadline for final forms and documentation is October 15, 2010 with actual product submission due by November 1, 2010. Judging will take place December 2-3, 2010, with results announced in February 2011. There is no fee for participation or limit on the number of products entered.
