Philips Color Kinetics has been honored by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), receiving an award for “Significant Achievement in Solid-State Lighting Research & Development.” The award recognizes Philips’ progress on an 18-month project intended to produce a highly efficient LED PAR lamp.

According to test results, the lamp being developed is already significantly more efficient than comparable LED PAR 38 lamps on the market, and 4-5 times more efficient than incandescent lamps. With an ultimate performance target of approximately 70 lumens/W, the fully realized lamp will meet or exceed the efficacy of nearly all conventional light sources.

“The call for energy-efficient lighting choices has never been greater, and we believe this important program is on track to deliver a fully integrated lamp with widespread market potential,” said Jeff Cassis, CEO, Philips Color Kinetics. “More than a research effort, this is a program with clear-cut performance and commercialization goals that can drive LED sources further into mainstream lighting.”

The project is being funded by a $1.7 million grant from the DOE. It incorporates advanced LED package and system integration technology plus novel, highly efficient driver technology and a unique optical arrangement–accounting for all the layers required to make LEDs truly useful for general illumination.

Not exactly lighting related, but had to share this find. Kacie Kinzer built robots to explore how people interact with physical space and documented her work at www.tweenbots.com.

tweenbots

These little cardboard robots, called Tweenbots, roll along at a constant slow speed, smiling and bearing a flag that says, “Help me!” Inevitably, the robot runs into an object, and depends on the kindness of strangers to help him on his way. The result is a journey of interaction between people and the Tweenbot.

Kinzer writes: “The Tweenbot’s unexpected presence in the city created an unfolding narrative … The journey the Tweenbots take each time they are released in the city becomes a story of people’s willingness to engage with a creature that mirrors human characteristics of vulnerability, of being lost, and of having intention without the means of achieving its goal alone.”

Check out one Tweenbot’s travels and interactions in the below short movie, recorded using a hidden videocamera.

Yesterday, we reported that Philips has acquired Italy-based Ilti Luce SpA, an LED design company for architectural indoor lighting. Philips has also recently announced that it has acquired Dynalite, a maker of lighting controls headquartered in Sydney, Australia. Dynalite has become part of the Lighting Electronics business within the Philips Lighting sector.

Dynalite was founded in 1989 and has a focus on energy management and building automation, architectural lighting control, home automation, and residential applications solutions. The company, with offices in Australia, the U.K., China, and Dubai, has around 130 employees.

LEDs and controls appear to continue to be the focus of M&A activity lately. With the acquisition of Dynalite, Philips significantly expands its existing lighting controls business. The combination will have an estimated total market value of approximately EUR2 billion.
