Product Monday: Eaton Resi Occupancy & Vacancy Sensors

Eaton has introduced a new line of residential occupancy and vacancy sensors designed to improve energy efficiency, simplify installation, and align with evolving code requirements. The OS306A Occupancy Sensor and VS306M Vacancy Sensor combine enhanced detection performance with a streamlined form factor suited for both new construction and retrofit applications.

The devices reflect continued demand for integrated, code-compliant lighting controls in residential settings, particularly as energy standards such as IECC and California Title 24 increasingly mandate automatic shutoff functionality in certain spaces. Eaton’s new sensors address these requirements while emphasizing ease of use for installers and intuitive operation for homeowners.

Both models feature a reduced-depth housing intended to facilitate installation in standard wallboxes, an advantage in retrofit scenarios where space constraints can complicate device replacement. A push-button programming interface replaces traditional adjustment dials, allowing for faster setup and minimizing installation errors. Motion sensitivity is configurable, enabling contractors to tailor performance based on room size, layout, and expected occupancy patterns.

At the core of the sensors is a passive infrared (PIR) detection system with a 180-degree field of view. Enhanced electronics extend the coverage area up to 1,000 square feet, supporting reliable operation across a range of residential environments, including larger open-plan spaces. This expanded detection capability positions the devices for applications beyond small rooms, such as garages or combined living areas.

The occupancy version (OS306A) automatically turns lighting on when motion is detected and off when the space is vacated, providing a fully hands-free solution. In contrast, the vacancy model (VS306M) requires manual-on activation and automatically switches lights off after a period of inactivity. This distinction supports compliance with codes that favor manual-on functionality to further reduce unnecessary energy use.

Both sensors incorporate ambient light sensing, a feature that inhibits activation when sufficient daylight is present. This daylight-responsive control can contribute to incremental energy savings, particularly in perimeter rooms with access to natural light.

From a design perspective, Eaton has emphasized aesthetics alongside performance. The sensors feature a color-matched lens for a cohesive appearance, along with interchangeable color kits that allow the device to blend with various interior finishes. This flexibility is increasingly relevant as residential lighting controls become more visible elements of interior design rather than purely functional components.

Target applications include high-traffic and intermittently occupied spaces such as hallways, entryways, laundry rooms, closets, garages, and home offices. In these areas, automated lighting control can deliver measurable energy savings while improving convenience and occupant experience.

With this launch, Eaton continues to expand its residential lighting controls portfolio, addressing a market that is steadily moving toward smarter, more energy-conscious solutions. By combining extended coverage, simplified installation, and code-compliant functionality, the OS306A and VS306M sensors are positioned to support both contractor efficiency and homeowner expectations in modern residential environments.
