DLC Finalizes Networked Lighting Controls (NLC) V5.2

 

The DesignLights Consortium (DLC) has published its Networked Lighting Controls (NLC) V5.2 technical requirements, with the update taking effect Aug. 3, 2026. The revision strengthens interoperability, standardizes reporting, and expands the role of lighting controls in integrated building systems, including HVAC-related applications.

The new version positions networked lighting controls as more than a lighting-only specification. According to the DLC, NLC V5.2 builds on V5.1 by recognizing emerging opportunities for NLC-HVAC integration, improving the usability of the Qualified Products List (QPL), and expanding eligibility to horticultural control systems that meet DLC requirements. The organization says the goal is to help efficiency programs, manufacturers, specifiers and building owners identify higher-performing systems with greater confidence.

That matters because the DLC says the NLC QPL is used by more than 100 utilities to determine incentive eligibility, and the list currently includes 96 NLC systems from more than 60 manufacturers. By tightening how systems are described and compared, the update should make it easier for programs to verify installations and for customers to select controls that deliver measurable savings.

One of the most notable changes in V5.2 is standardized reporting of energy-saving configuration settings. The DLC says this is intended to improve confidence that systems are installed and programmed correctly, since proper configuration is critical to achieving expected savings. In practical terms, that could reduce uncertainty for utility administrators and speed up review of projects seeking incentives.

The standardized reporting approach also aligns with the industry’s push toward more transparent, data-rich control systems. As buildings become more connected, program administrators increasingly want comparable information that can support verification, savings tracking, and cross-system coordination. V5.2 reflects that shift by making reporting a core part of the specification rather than an afterthought.

The other major update is integration with smart thermostats, using occupancy data from lighting controls to help HVAC systems respond when spaces are empty. The DLC says this can produce substantial additional energy savings, especially in small and medium-sized buildings where occupancy can vary widely and controls are often underused. The organization cites potential HVAC reductions of 8% to 21% when NLC-HVAC integration is implemented.

That framing is important for utilities and program designers looking beyond the lighting retrofit itself. By linking lighting data with thermostat operation, V5.2 supports whole-building efficiency strategies that can capture savings across systems, not just at the fixture level. For markets focused on decarbonization and harder-to-reach customers, that may make controls retrofits more attractive and more scalable.

While V5.2 adds new integration and reporting capabilities, cybersecurity requirements remain unchanged. The DLC says cybersecurity has been a focus area of the NLC program for years and that the same stringent requirements continue to apply in the new version.

Overall, V5.2 is less of a dramatic rewrite than a strategic refinement. It keeps the program’s security posture intact while nudging the market toward better documentation, stronger interoperability and more building-system integration.
