Light + Health, Products + Technology

Visible Light Disinfection Now Inside Garbage Disposals!

InSinkErator, one of the leading manufacturers of garbage disposals, has released its LEDefense line, with antimicrobial light technology added to garbage disposals to fight the odor-causing bacteria that builds up with food waste. Instead of waiting until a disposal smells bad and then using citrus peels or cleaning pods, the product uses always-on light to help prevent the problem in the first place.

LEDefense is a collaboration between InSinkErator and Vyv, a company known for antimicrobial light technology. The system uses a specific visible-light wavelength around 405 nm, which is designed to reduce bacteria growth while remaining safe for continuous use around people, pets, and plants.

Disposal odors usually come from bacteria that thrive in dark, damp conditions inside and around the sink drain. LEDefense targets that root cause rather than merely masking smells, which makes it a more proactive hygiene solution than the usual after-the-fact cleaning methods.

The technology is based on violet-blue light in the visible spectrum, not UV-C. That distinction matters because this approach is UV-free and intended for unrestricted, continuous operation, making it suitable for a built-in appliance.

InSinkErator is introducing LEDefense at the premium end of its lineup, pairing it with some of the company’s most powerful and quietest disposal models. That suggests the feature is being marketed not just as a technical upgrade, but as a home-wellness and convenience feature for buyers willing to pay more for cleaner operation and less maintenance.

LEDefense is part of a broader consumer trend toward built-in, passive protection technologies that reduce effort and improve hygiene. Instead of relying on users to remember to clean a smelly disposal, the appliance continuously works in the background to limit bacterial buildup and help keep the kitchen fresher.
