EMerge Alliance to Host Webinar on 2014 NEC Updates for New Low-Voltage DC Lighting and Power Distribution Systems

The EMerge Alliance – an open industry association leading the rapid adoption of safe direct-current (DC) power distribution standards for commercial buildings – recently announced that it will be conducting a webinar on Feb. 7, 2014, to explain the new 2014 National Electric Code (NEC) requirements for suspended ceiling power distribution systems.

Presented by some of the key architects of the DC power standards movement, the webinar will provide an overview of the new Article 393 and the basic technical, code and assembly requirements for designing and installing suspended ceiling power distribution systems that operate on low-voltage DC power. It will also cover the 2014 revision to Article 411, which specifically allows lighting systems to be connected to Class-2 power supplies.

According to EMerge Alliance Chairman Brian Patterson, the new code changes reflect the increasing interest in using the ceiling grid as a means for incorporating on-site renewable energy and distributing DC power directly to lighting and other low-voltage devices that use electricity in DC form.

“DC power distribution systems have been gaining more and more support in the building industry as a result of new energy efficiency standards and the push for net-zero energy buildings, but the codes have remained open for interpretation, until now,” said Patterson. “The addition of Article 393 gives electrical contractors and local inspection agencies clear guidance for DC distribution systems, which will eliminate potential inspection issues, costs and delays for new DC installations.”

In addition to the webinar on Feb. 7, the EMerge Alliance will be presenting a hands-on course titled, “Implementing New Low Voltage Direct Current Lighting and Power Distribution Systems in Accordance with 2014 NFPA NEC 70 Article 393,” at the LIGHTFAIR International 2014 conference in Las Vegas.
