NEMA’s lamp indices for incandescent lamps and CFLs declined 7.1% and 18.2%, respectively, on a year-over-year basis during the third quarter of 2009.

The incandescent lamp sales index fell for the twelfth consecutive quarter and registered its lowest level ever recorded (55.4).

CFL sales have contracted in five of the last 6 quarters, slipping to 184.1, which is a level that has not been observed since the end of 2006.

In terms of market share, CFLs gave back previous gains during the third quarter, decreasing to 23% from the record high of 26.6% observed during the previous quarter. With residential construction still at a very low level and households struggling in the aftermath of the Great Recession, demand for household lamps, chiefly the more costly CFLs, remains weak.

The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) has published LE 6-2009 Procedure for Determining Target Efficacy Ratings for Commercial, Industrial and Residential Luminaires. The document, produced by NEMA’s Luminaire Section, was last published in 2008.

LE 6 provides a procedure for the determination of the target efficacy rating (TER) for light fixtures under laboratory test conditions and describes categories or types of products used in common indoor and outdoor lighting applications. It does not apply to fixtures for specialized applications such as products intended to be aimed, accent luminaires, rough or hazardous use luminaires or emergency lighting. It is recommended to be used only as a guide to help in the selection of luminaires since TER does not address application characteristics such as color, uniformity, glare, or other important considerations.

The 2009 revision includes updates to the calculation of the energy effectiveness factor and clarifications to the luminaire types and classifications.

LE 6 may be downloaded free here.

titanic_sculptureA major new public artwork for Belfast, Ireland, entitled “Kit,” was recently unveiled at the public realm area at the Abercorn Residential Complex at Titanic Quarter as part of Belfast Festival at Queen’s. The high profile contemporary artwork is by Essex-based artist Tony Stallard and is the artist’s largest public artwork to date. “Kit” is a dramatic site specific light sculpture which is over 44 feet tall and cast in bronze. The artwork depicts recognizable Titanic elements on an outer frame and the overall sculpture suggests toy kits or air fix models. The signature public artwork was commissioned through open competition by ArtSpark NI on behalf of Titanic Quarter Ltd and Arts & Business NI, as part of the Integrated Arts Strategy for the Abercorn Residential Complex.

For Stallard, the sculpture is intended to symbolize Belfast as an industrial pioneer at the time of building the Titanic and act as a contemporary tribute to the shipbuilders.

CRee LRP-38Cree, Inc. has been selected to provide LED lighting to Walmart for new stores and renovations. Walmart plans to install Cree LRP-38 LED lamps in 650 stores during the first year, replacing ceramic metal halide in the produce and electronics departments. Cree’s LR6 recessed LED downlights are also being used in new construction applications.

The Cree LRP-38, a PAR38 style LED lamp, was selected for its energy efficiency, long lifetime, controlled beam and high color-rendition, according to Cree. Rated at 50,000 hours, the LRP-38 consumes 82% less energy than the 70W ceramic metal halide bulbs it replaces. The unique design of the LRP-38 also reduces glare for customers, focusing attention on the merchandise and not the lighting.
