LIGHTFAIR has announced the debut of the Spotlight Lounge at the 2011 Philadelphia show. Staged directly on the trade show floor among the expansive offerings of the LFI exhibitors, the Lounge presents a forum to engage and inform attendees.

Supporting this launch and taking center stage in the Spotlight Lounge is headlining show keynote speaker and iconic lighting designer Ingo Maurer. Maurer will present Addicted to Light—Thank God for Shadows in an exclusive on-site presentation, followed by an interview conducted by design editor for T: The New York Times Style Magazine, Pilar Viladas.

A renowned innovator, Maurer started to design exceptional lamps and lighting systems in 1966. Many of his works have been included in permanent design collections such as The Museum of Modern Art in New York and seen at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum in New York, the Bauhaus Archiv in Berlin, the Fondation Cartier pour l’Art Contemporain in Jouy-en-Josas by Paris, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, and dozens of other exhibits around the world.

During his presentation in the Spotlight Lounge on Wednesday, May 18 at 3 PM, Maurer will speak about the critical harmony in the relationship between light and shadow and how their balance or imbalance impacts the design process. He will guide and inform designers to follow their instincts and design without compromise and with joy to achieve fantastic results.

Additional presentations, student awards and ceremonies will be featured in the Spotlight Lounge during the show. Key showcases and events include the IES and IALD Gallery of Awards, the Design With Light student competition, a cocktail hour and several giveaways. The Lounge will offer a comfortable environment for attendees to network and relax, as well as a stage with theater seating to support the highlighted presentations.

The Spotlight Lounge will be open during the trade show floor days, May 17-19, 2011. More information on the Lounge and the networking events can be found online here.

LightNOW Editor Craig DiLouie And Industry Veteran Howard Wolfman to Present Lamp/Ballast Update at LIGHTFAIR 2011

For the past two years, Howard Wolfman of LumiSpec Consulting have presented the “What’s New in Lamps and Ballasts” seminar at LIGHTFAIR to audiences as large as 500 show attendees….

This is Howard giving his part of the presentation last year in Las Vegas, with Nick Bleeker, representing LIGHTFAIR, who introduced us, in the background.

For the past two years, Howard Wolfman of LumiSpec Consulting have presented the “What’s New in Lamps and Ballasts” seminar at LIGHTFAIR to audiences as large as 500 show attendees. Howard had done the presentation for a number of years previous to my getting involved, and helped make it the must-see LIGHTFAIR event it is today. I’m glad to be working with him again and presenting on this important topic. Last year’s presentation was very highly rated by attendees.

The seminar presents an unbiased view of the latest developments in lamp and ballast technology over the past 12-18 months along with the implications for how lighting is designed and used. The seminar will cover fluorescent/CFL, HID and LED. New advances will be compared and contrasted with existing technologies and each other, with a focus on lighting quality, energy savings, lamp/ballast/control compatibility, applications and legislative and code compliance.

Learning Objective 1: Learn about the most innovative new product introductions over the past 12-18 months.
Learning Objective 2: Understand how these advances in lamp and ballast technology compare to existing technology.
Learning Objective 3: Understand new technological and legislative trends in lamp and ballast design and their impact on new applications, lighting quality, energy savings and lamp/ballast/control compatibility.
Learning Objective 4: Identify new lamp and ballast types and understand their implications for how lighting is designed and used.

The seminar will be presented Wednesday, May 18, from 4:30 to 6:00 PM. Hope to see you there!
