What Is SOB And How Does It Compare To COB Strip Light?

SOB LED strip lights stand for SMD On Board (or sometimes Silicone On Board), and it is a hybrid next-generation technology designed to bridge the gap between traditional SMD (Surface Mounted Device) and COB (Chip on Board) strips.

How SOB Differs from COB

Construction: While COB strips mount bare LED chips directly under a single continuous layer of phosphor gel, SOB strips use individually packaged mini-SMD chips fused to the board, each with its own precise phosphor coating, and then topped with a continuous, light-softening silicone housing or diffusing layer.

Appearance Off/On: Traditional COB strips typically show a noticeable yellow or uneven hue when turned off due to the solid phosphor strip. SOB configurations offer a cleaner look when unpowered and eliminate the yellowish halo effect while maintaining an unpixellated, continuous line of light when turned on.

Performance & Durability: SOB strip lights often utilize thicker electroplated copper circuit boards (such as 105µm roll-to-roll designs) that run cooler, handle higher wattage per meter, and resist voltage drop over longer single-feed runs better than standard COB options.

Whether SOB or COB performs better depends entirely on your project’s specific goals. SOB strips generally win on raw power, long-run electrical performance, and physical durability, while COB strips excel in ultra-tight spaces and maximum flexibility.

The performance differences break down across key technical categories:

  1. Electrical Performance & Voltage Drop
  • 🏆Winner: SOB
  • Why: Advanced SOB strips are built on thick, heavy-duty electroplated copper circuit boards (often up to 105µm roll-to-roll copper). This allows SOB to handle higher wattages and maintain consistent brightness over extended single-feed runs up to 10 meters. COB strips typically use thinner 35µm or 70µm copper, which restricts uncompromised single-feed runs to 5 meters before you notice visible dimming (voltage drop).
  1. Lifespan & Thermal Management
  • 🏆Winner: SOB
  • Why: COB strips pack bare LED chips into a hyper-dense line directly under one continuous strip of phosphor gel. This concentrates heat heavily in one thin strip. SOB utilizes individually packaged mini-SMDs, allowing each diode its own optimized thermal route to the heavier copper board, keeping the system cooler and extending its stable lifespan.
  1. Aesthetics & Multi-Batch Consistency
  • 🏆Tie (Context-Dependent)
  • Unpowered Look: SOB wins. COB strips leave a distinct, bright yellow line visible when turned off. SOB uses individual mini-SMD chips capped with white silicone, appearing clean and blending in when unpowered.
  • Color Consistency: SOB wins. Because COB relies on pouring a single layer of yellow phosphor over varying chip wavelengths, batch-to-batch color shifting is a common issue. SOB uses precise DAM protection and pre-binned SMDs for tighter color-matching across separate installations.
  • Smooth Glow: Both create a premium, seamless, unpixellated line of light.
  1. Physical Flexibility & Size
  • 🏆Winner: COB
  • Why: Because COB strips do not have rigid individual SMD plastic bodies, they are incredibly thin and malleable. They can be much narrower strips, bent into tighter radiuses and squeezed into ultra-narrow aluminum profiles where an SOB strip might be slightly too rigid or wide.

Performance Summary

The Verdict: If you are lighting a large-scale architectural installation requiring long, continuous runs and maximum reliability, SOB performs better. If you are doing short runs in intricate, tight spaces (like custom furniture or very shallow millwork), COB remains the superior choice.
