Motorized architectural lighting is undergoing a meaningful shift, driven by a factor that has historically constrained its adoption: fixture size. For decades, remote-controlled luminaires delivering full pan, tilt, and beam adjustment required large apertures—often exceeding 150 mm—along with substantial ceiling depth and access. As a result, the category remained largely confined to large-scale hospitality, performance venues, and landmark architectural projects where infrastructure could support the installation.
That limitation is now being solved through a new generation of compact motorized fixtures. RCL by Luminii’s NOVA represents notable progress, reducing the form factor to a 100 mm cut-out while retaining full remote control of pan, tilt, beam angle, and color temperature. Crucially, all adjustments can be made from floor level, eliminating the need for ceiling access and associated maintenance disruption.
This reduction in size changes the specification landscape. Projects that were previously excluded—boutique hotels, galleries, high-end retail environments, and residential applications—now have a viable path to integrating motorized accent lighting. In retrofit scenarios in particular, the ability to work within smaller apertures significantly lowers the barrier to entry, avoiding extensive ceiling rework while still enabling precision aiming and post-installation flexibility.
From a design standpoint, the smaller aperture also improves ceiling integration. A 100 mm trimless or flush installation allows the luminaire to recede into the architecture, minimizing visual impact. This is a critical consideration in spaces where ceiling planes are tightly controlled and fixture visibility is undesirable. In these contexts, motorized lighting transitions from a visible technical solution to a discreet design tool.
Performance has not been sacrificed in the process of miniaturization. NOVA maintains 90+ CRI, a tight 6° minimum beam angle suitable for high-contrast accenting, and a tunable white range from 1840K to 2765K, supporting applications that require warm dim or hospitality-focused color tuning. Additionally, the platform introduces improved durability, with a mechanical life rated at three times that of earlier RCL generations—an important factor for long-term maintenance planning and lifecycle cost considerations.
The broader implication is a shift in how motorized luminaires are specified. Historically, their use was often limited to projects with dedicated lighting control budgets and infrastructure. With smaller, more adaptable fixtures, the technology becomes accessible to a wider range of project types and scales. Designers can now incorporate remote-controlled precision into spaces where it was previously impractical, both in new construction and renovation contexts.
RCL by Luminii’s project history—including installations at Claridge’s Ballroom and the InterContinental London—demonstrates the category’s origins in large, high-profile environments. NOVA signals the next phase: extending those capabilities into more constrained and design-sensitive applications without compromising performance.

For the lighting industry, this is less about a single product launch and more about a category recalibration. As motorized luminaires continue to shrink while maintaining output quality and reliability, their role is expanding—from a specialized solution to a more broadly applicable tool in the architectural lighting toolkit.
