Clean Rooms And Amber Lighting

Amber LED light fixtures are used in cleanrooms to minimize the impact on photochemically sensitive materials and processes, such as photoresists used in semiconductor manufacturing. The 590nm amber light filters out shorter, potentially damaging wavelengths (like blue and UV), preventing premature reactions or exposure.

Why Amber Lighting is Used in Cleanrooms:

Protection of Photoresists:

In semiconductor manufacturing, photolithography uses photoresists, which are light-sensitive materials. Exposing them to unwanted light (especially UV and blue) can initiate unwanted chemical reactions, degrading their performance and potentially ruining the fabrication process.

Wavelength Filtering:

Amber lighting, with its specific wavelength range, effectively filters out these undesirable wavelengths, protecting the photoresists and maintaining their integrity.

Reduced Light Pollution and Eye Strain:

Amber light also offers benefits like reduced light pollution, eye strain, and glare, making it suitable for prolonged work in a controlled environment.

LEDs are preferred:

LED fixtures are favored in cleanrooms due to their efficiency and negligible UV emissions, making them ideal for protecting photoresists and reducing heat buildup.

Cleanroom light fixtures, like recessed troffers and downlights, are designed specifically for controlled environments, often with sealed constructions to prevent contamination and meet IP ratings (like IP65) for dust and water protection.

Recessed Troffers: These are a common type of cleanroom lighting fixture, often used in T-bar grid ceilings, and can be equipped with amber LED options for photosensitive applications.

Downlights: Similar to troffers, downlights offer a clean, sealed design and can be configured with amber LEDs to protect sensitive materials.

Flexible Options: Some manufacturers offer customizable solutions, including tunable white and amber LED fixtures, allowing for both standard white lighting and amber illumination for specific tasks.

Amber lighting in cleanrooms is a specialized solution designed to protect photosensitive materials and processes from unwanted light exposure, ensuring the integrity of products and operations in controlled environments. More information from Kenall and Kurtzon are available here and here.
