IES Developing LP-30 To Provide Guidance On Using TM-30

The IES is developing a new lighting practice, LP-30, which will provide guidance on the use of ANSI/IES TM-30-24 Technical Memorandum: IES Method for Evaluating Light Source Color Rendition. Annex E within TM-30 also provides recommendations for specifying light source color rendition and assists in selecting light sources that meet color rendering requirements. LP-30 is expected to be released later this year and will be written for specifiers on how to best progress through each step of the color rendering design process to achieve the most desirable results.

LP-30 is expected to address:

1. understanding how TM-30 was developed and how it has evolved over time;

2. conceptual knowledge of color rendition as an important part of lighting quality, including how different aspects of color rendition—such as color fidelity, gamut area, and gamut shape—can be summarized and communicated;

3. the components of the core calculation framework of TM-30 and how the system is used to calculate a variety of outputs of the method;

4. the correct interpretation of values for the 149 numerical output measures and 1 graphic defined in the standard;

5. what is and is not included in the standardized method and understand how the principles can be applied to a unique or custom situation;

6. applying TM-30 to specify the performance characteristics of a light source;

7. understanding how TM-30 differs from alternative methods, particularly the CIE General Color Rendering Index, Ra (CRI).

TM-30-24 can be found here.
