Product Monday: Osram Produces LED that Offers Longer Life at Higher Temperatures

Excessive heat generation is one of the main reasons why light-emitting diodes fail. With the Oslon Square, Osram Opto Semiconductors has produced an LED that withstands high ambient temperatures.

To ensure that the color point of each LED in a luminaire remains uniform even at higher temperatures, they are measured and binned at 85°C. This temperature comes very close to that encountered in lighting applications within buildings, in everything from spotlights to retrofit light sources. Measuring and binning at operating temperatures of 85° C is significant to customers who further process LEDs into luminaires. Customers receive precise information on parameters such as luminous flux or color stability, which is needed to optimally define the properties of their products.

Osram has optimized the heat dissipation of the Oslon Square to allow an increase in the junction temperature. With that, the Oslon Square can reach a lifetime of more than 50,000 hours, even at high temperatures up to 135°C in the LED. Due to higher permitted junction temperatures, fewer large heat sinks are required, simplifying the design of lamps and luminaires because they can be smaller and, therefore, less costly. The improved temperature behavior also leads to higher luminous efficacy in the application.

The Oslon Square is suitable for various building applications. The product is rated at 2400-5000K, >80 CRI and 202 lumens.

Currently, the new LED is undergoing extensive quality testing and the certification process under the LM-80 long lifetime standard is in progress. The results of the 3,000-hour test are expected at the end of the year, and the results of the 6,000-hour test are expected in spring 2014.
