Nichia Amber LED Reduces Insect Attraction

Nichia’s reports that a joint study with the Tokushima Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Technology Support Center found Nichia’s HPS color LED at 1800K (amber) had the lowest insect attraction among the tested light sources. The company says the result came from both laboratory and outdoor evaluations comparing LEDs with different correlated color temperatures (CCTs).

The article frames this as a practical lighting development for outdoor spaces where reducing insect attraction matters. Nichia says the 1800K LED is intended to improve comfort around sidewalks, parks, and building entrances, while also helping reduce environmental impact near natural areas and places where ecosystem protection is important.

Nichia also points to the product platform behind the result. In March 2026, it expanded its low-CCT, high-power LED lineup with NVSW219GL, including the 1800K option, and says the package uses a ceramic substrate for high reliability, high output, and long lifetime. The company highlights outdoor durability as a key feature. It says the LED is well suited for street and roadway lighting because it can withstand rain, wind, and broad temperature swings.

Amber, sodium-lamp-like light at 1800K can significantly reduce insect attraction compared with other tested CCTs, making it attractive for municipal, infrastructure, and environmentally sensitive lighting applications. Nichia’s announcement positions the 1800K HPS color LED as a solution for cities and facilities that want usable outdoor light with less insect disturbance and less strain on nearby ecosystems.
