Zigbee 4 And Suzi
The Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) has released Zigbee 4 and Suzi to standardize secure, interoperable, and scalable IoT connectivity. These standards aim to make enterprise IoT networks more secure, scalable, and reliable, especially for commercial and industrial use. Zigbee 4 adds sub‑GHz (800/900 MHz) support for better range and building penetration, branded as Suzi for long‑range outdoor and municipal deployments. The R23 spec strengthens security with device interviews, dynamic security negotiation, replay‑attack protections, and link‑key monitoring. Operational costs are reduced via batch commissioning, Zigbee Direct smartphone onboarding, easier Trust Center replacement, backward compatibility, and power‑saving features for battery devices. Recolight Used Luminaire Certification
Recolight’s Used Luminaire Certification is a new UK service designed to build trust in second-life lighting and accelerate reuse of existing fixtures. It provides an independent report, developed with Simon Fisher, estimating remaining burn hours and the embodied carbon savings from reusing luminaires, helping address uncertainty over lifespan and environmental impact. The certificate does not replace warranties or CE marking, which must come from qualified contractors or manufacturers. Aimed at developers, engineers, and designers, the program supports circular economy goals and carbon-reduction commitments in the built environment. More information is available here.
2 New CIE Publications
The International Commission on Illumination (CIE) released two new publications:
CIE 256:2025 – Measurement of Human Skin Colour
This document provides an authoritative framework for the standardized and reproducible measurement of human skin colour. Prepared by CIE Technical Committee 1-92, it establishes a harmonized methodological foundation for the evaluation, comparison and reproduction of skin colour across scientific and industrial domains. The report is particularly relevant for its comprehensive treatment of measurement uncertainty and protocol consistency, addressing key variables such as instrumentation, illumination geometry, body location and individual diversity to ensure reliable and comparable results. This new standard can be purchased at the CIE Webshop.
CIE PS 003:2025 – CIE Position Statement on Obtrusive Light and Light Pollution, 1st Edition
Building on CIE’s ongoing work on light and the environment, this Position Statement addresses the balance between the benefits of lighting at night and the need to minimise its unwanted effects. The document summarises current understanding, highlights best practices for mitigating obtrusive light, and identifies key areas where further research is needed. For more details and to download the full document, visit the CIE webpage for Position Statements.
Zhaga Book 18
Zhaga Book 18 defines a standardized smart interface between outdoor LED luminaires and pluggable sensing or communication modules. It specifies mechanical, electrical, power, and communication aspects so that any certified node can interoperate with any certified luminaire, creating a multi-vendor ecosystem. The interface uses a compact 4‑pin 24 V connector and supports functions such as dimming control, monitoring, and IoT connectivity for smart cities. Later editions introduce hybrid architectures combining ANSI/NEMA receptacles with Zhaga sockets, enabling easy upgrades, serviceability, and future-proof smart outdoor lighting.
