Ombra “room-as-an-appliance,” is a self-powered, and relocatable smart pergola developed by SolarYard (a LetRight Brand), in China. Ombra offers high-tech, off-grid garden structures, to transform the traditional concept of a pergola—a structure with ancient roots in China, Rome, and Egypt—into a modern, multifunctional living space.
The Ombra is designed as a store-bought, air-conditioned room that can be placed in gardens, by pools, on rooftops, or on undeveloped land, offering flexibility and independence from the electrical grid. Its modular nature allows multiple units to be joined seamlessly, expanding usable space as needed.
A key technology in the Ombra is its patented integration of solar cells into adjustable louvers. These louvers serve a dual purpose: they generate power for the unit and provide shade, while also functioning as a weather-responsive roof. The smart control system manages air conditioning, sunshade blinds, misting systems, and ambient lighting, creating a comfortable environment in a wide range of climates—from -20°C to 55°C (68°F to 131°F). The glass walls can slide open to blend indoor and outdoor spaces, or close to provide full shelter, making the Ombra suitable for all weather conditions. The addition of battery storage enhances its autonomy, while the option to connect to the grid offers further flexibility.
The Ombra’s design and functionality have earned it significant recognition, including the Red Dot Design Award, iF Design Award, and a Gold Prize at the 2025 Milan Design Awards. The shift toward factory-built, high-tech, modular living spaces could change how homes are constructed and retrofitted, making it easier to incorporate advanced systems and adapt to changing needs. The Ombra’s scalability means it can serve residential, commercial, and hospitality purposes—such as expanding restaurant seating or providing weatherproof event spaces—offering new business opportunities and lifestyle enhancements.
Available in two sizes (4×4 meters and 6×4 meters), Ombra units can be assembled quickly and relocated as desired. While pricing and installation details are pending, in-factory manufacturing will keep costs competitive and installation times short.
The Ombra represents an interesting direction in the evolution of habitable spaces, blending sustainability, technology, and design. Its ability to create comfortable, flexible, and off-grid living environments positions it for applications ranging from personal retreats to commercial ventures.
