IESNYC Announces Winners of the 2020 Lumen Awards

The Illuminating Engineering Society’s New York City section have announced 14 winners of the 2020 Lumen Awards, with Cooley Monato Studio and the DLR Group taking top honors.

Cooley Monato Studio won an Award of Excellence for the TWA Hotel and Event Center, Queens, NY, and DLR Group won the same award for the Chandler History Museum: Infinite Shade, Chandler, AZ.

TWA Hotel and Event Center – Cooley Monato Studio: Eero Saarinen’s 1962 TWA Flight Center at JFK, a landmarked architectural masterpiece was transformed, and expanded into a hotel and event center. Mid-century modern aesthetic drove the design of the new two-winged hotel areas and the existing ballroom in the Flight Center.

Chandler History Museum: Infinite Shade – DLR Group: An outdoor courtyard connects the new Chandler Museum and the renovated McCullough-Price House, and features a work of public art titled “Infinite Shade.” The brushed–stainless canopy provides interest and shade during the heat of the day. At night, architectural lighting of the installation animates the plaza with a dynamic, multi-colored light show.

Seven Merit Awards were awarded to: The Vessel New York, NY, by L’Observatoire International; The Well, New York, NY, by BOLD; Royal Caribbean Terminal at PortMiami, Miami, FL, by Focus Lighting; KOMA, Marina Bay, Singapore, by Focus Lighting, Hudson Yards Financial Services Firm, New York, NY, by Lighting Workshop; Comcast Technology Center, Philadelphia, PA, by Tillotson Lighting Associates; Center for Health and Well-Being, Winter Park, FL, by Cline Bettridge Bernstein Lighting Design.

Five Citation Awards were presented to: Waterlicht, New York, NY by Studio Roosegaarde for Environmental Awareness; Salvage Swings, New York, NY by TM Light for Unexpected Use of Light; Paradise Club at Times Square EDITION, New York, NY by Fisher Marantz Stone for Creative Use of Color; Mwabwindo School, Mwabwindo Village, Zambia, Renfro Design Group, for Sustainable Daylighting; and Glenstone, Potomac, MD, Arup, for Daylighting Design.
