GE: Proposed Agreement Between Cleveland and Chinese LED Maker “Bad Deal for City”

Last Friday, the Plain Dealer reported here that attorneys for GE Lighting are contending that a proposed agreement between the City of Cleveland and Sunpu-Opto Semiconductor Ltd., is bad for the city and could even be unlawful. The proposed 10-year deal gives the Chinese manufacturer exclusive rights to sell millions of LED lights to the city in exchange for the company making Cleveland its North American headquarters, creating 350 jobs. On Monday, the Plain Dealer reported here that the City Council’s Finance Committee approved the deal, which is expected to be given final approval next week when it goes for a full City Council vote.

Apparently, Cleveland is interested in buying linear fluorescent replacements and streetlights, even though the Department of Energy has found commercial introductions for T8 replacements to date wanting.
