LIGHTFAIR Recap

LIGHTFAIR International, taking place April 24-28 at the San Diego Convention Center, was one of the most interesting events in years. LIGHTFAIR once reflected the glacial pace of the lighting industry, but that era is over. LED technology is changing everything. Manufacturers have taken the technology to a level where they’ve mastered general lighting applications and are now streamlining and innovating based on the unique capabilities of the source. The more than 600 exhibitors displayed a wide range of products reflecting continuing stratification between specification and performance grades, with innovation focused on color-tuning capabilities, connected lighting and new form factors. Shorter product cycles have made keeping on top of new products essential. Several major manufacturers, such as GE and Sylvania, rolled out new branding as they adapt, while many new smaller players came out in force with a significant presence.

The conference track included 83 courses with notable ideas focusing on circadian lighting, tunable-color control, intelligence/connectivity, integration with systems such as power over Ethernet (PoE), and the Industrial Internet of Things. This month, LightNOW will present some of the major resources, products and awards announced at the show.

Looking forward to the next LIGHTFAIR as it returns to Philadelphia May 7-11, 2017.
